Vijayanagara Deva Raya II Copper Jital – Elephant & Gajaganda Berunda Type, c. 1426–1446 AD M84

An attractive medieval copper Jital issued during the reign of Deva Raya II of the Vijayanagara Empire, one of the important rulers of the Sangama dynasty.

The obverse features a standing elephant facing right, holding a dagger or sword in its trunk. Above the elephant are a conch shell and the Nagari letter “De”, referring to Deva Raya.

The reverse carries the distinctive three-line Nagari legend:

Raya / Gajaganda / Berunda

with the royal sword below.

This distinctive title is associated with Deva Raya II and his martial reputation. The elephant design, bold Nagari lettering and royal sword make this one of the more interesting copper types of medieval Vijayanagara coinage.

This specimen retains a strong elephant figure, visible surrounding symbols and a substantially readable reverse legend, together with an attractive old brown patina.
