Sivaganga Sasivarnadeva Copper Kasu – Rare Overstruck Error, 1730–1750 AD
An unusual copper Kasu from Sivaganga, attributed to the period of Sasivarnadeva (1730–1750 AD), showing a clearly visible overstruck minting error.
Unlike a normal single-struck Kasu, this coin shows traces of more than one design impressed onto the same flan. Elements of the original religious motifs remain visible beneath the later strike, producing overlapping figures and symbols on both sides.
Coins of this Sivaganga series are known with designs including Lord Rama, Lakshmana and the Sivalinga, and specialist catalogues record rare examples where these designs were accidentally struck over one another during manufacture.
The overlapping devices on this specimen are clearly visible, making it an interesting piece not only for collectors of Sivaganga and South Indian coinage, but also for collectors specialising in minting errors and overstruck coins.
