Constantius II Ancient Roman Coin – Vetranio Issue, Christian Chi-Rho, Siscia AD 350 M77

An attractive ancient Roman bronze coin of Constantius II (AD 337–361), struck at the Siscia mint in AD 350 during the brief rule of Vetranio.

The obverse depicts a pearl-diademed, draped and cuirassed bust of Constantius II facing right, surrounded by the imperial legend:

D N CONSTANTIVS P F AVG

The reverse bears the historically significant Christian legend:

HOC SIGNO VICTOR ERIS

meaning approximately “By this sign you will be victorious.” Constantius is shown standing and holding a military labarum bearing Christian symbolism together with a spear/sceptre, while Victory stands beside him and crowns the emperor. Comparable Siscia issues are catalogued with this same reverse composition and were struck by Vetranio in the name of Constantius II.

The coin retains an especially attractive portrait, with the diadem, facial features, bust and substantial portions of the obverse inscription remaining clearly visible. The reverse is considerably more worn, although the central figures and portions of the surrounding legend remain identifiable. The irregular flan, edge loss and ancient surface patina are consistent with its long circulation and age.
