Devaraya II Vijayanagara Copper Kasu – Elephant Type, AD 1424–1446 M103

An original copper Kasu attributed to Devaraya II of the Vijayanagara Empire, one of the most important rulers of the Sangama dynasty.

The obverse features a standing elephant, one of the characteristic motifs used on Devaraya II’s coinage. Different varieties of this series show the elephant accompanied by royal and celestial symbols such as a dagger, sun, moon, conch or discus.

The reverse carries a multi-line Nagari/Kannada legend associated with Devaraya II. Although parts of the inscription on this specimen are worn from circulation, substantial elements of the original design remain visible.

Devaraya II ruled Vijayanagara from approximately AD 1424–1446, during one of the empire’s strongest periods politically and culturally. Contemporary and numismatic sources record a varied monetary system under his reign, including gold, silver and copper issues.
