An original late Roman bronze coin of Julian II, struck while he served as Caesar between AD 355 and 361.
The obverse shows a bare-headed, draped and cuirassed bust of Julian II facing right, surrounded by the Latin legend:
D N IVLIANVS NOB CAES
The reverse features the famous FEL TEMP REPARATIO or “Fallen Horseman” design. A helmeted Roman soldier advances left, spearing a fallen enemy horseman who raises his hands while collapsing with his horse.
This dramatic military reverse is one of the most recognizable designs of the Late Roman Empire and was issued under several members of the Constantinian dynasty.
The coin is attributed to the Siscia mint, with traces of the mintmark visible in the exergue. This specimen retains a particularly attractive portrait of Julian along with a natural green-brown ancient patina. The reverse shows circulation wear and surface deposits but the main fallen-horseman scene remains identifiable.
