An original copper Paisa issued during the reign of Tipu Sultan of Mysore, one of the most recognizable rulers of late 18th-century South India.
The obverse features a standing elephant facing right, one of the characteristic designs adopted for Tipu Sultan’s copper coinage. Above the elephant are traces of the Mauludi date/control characters used on these issues.
The reverse carries a Persian inscription identifying the mint and issue, although portions of the legend on this specimen are obscured by age-related surface deposits.
Tipu Sultan introduced an extensive monetary system using distinctive gold, silver and copper denominations. His copper paisas frequently depict elephants facing either right or left, with varieties distinguished by dates, Persian letters and mints including Patan (Seringapatam), Nagar, Faiz Hisar and others.
This specimen retains a particularly clear elephant design with an old brown copper surface and patches of natural green and reddish patination.
