A scarce and historically important silver punch-marked coin attributed to the Sangam Pandyas of ancient Tamilakam, representing one of the earliest monetary traditions associated with the Pandyan kingdom of South India.
The obverse carries a group of ancient punch-marked symbols, characteristic of this early coinage tradition. The reverse bears the distinctive stylised fish punch, the dynastic emblem traditionally associated with the Pandyan rulers.
Silver punch-marked issues of the Sangam Pandyas are considerably harder to encounter than many contemporary punch-marked series. Specialist numismatic references document varieties featuring combinations of symbols including the six-armed device, stupa or taurine motifs, railed standards and trees, while the reverse is distinguished by the Pandyan fish emblem.
This particular specimen is especially appealing for its clearly visible punches and strongly defined fish symbol, together with its characteristic irregular ancient silver flan. It represents an important tangible connection to the early history, trade and monetary culture of ancient Tamil Nadu.
